Victor’s Insider Scoop on What It’s Like to Heliski

First: Heliskiing is my MOST favorite thing!
Second: People want to listen to your vacation story (and want to see your vacation photos and videos) when there’s a helicopter involved.

In the 1970s I was on my way to becoming a heliski guide. I’d passed the prerequisite courses of Emergency Medical Technician and Avalanche Safety for Ski Guiding. I’d then passed the difficult Winter Assistant Guide Course given by the ACMG (Association of Canadian Mountain Guides). I taught mountaineering skills to cadets at the Banff National Army Cadet Camp. But my skiing wasn’t up to snuff and I sadly gave up and moved on to other things.

Play the 30 second video for a quick taste of what heliskiing’s like.

I hear the whine of the helicopter turbine as it starts up
I smell the jet fuel exhaust
I feel the helicopter vibrate as it lifts off
I see the grins of anticipatory excitement on my fellow-heliskiers
I taste the powder snow as it flies up into my face on each descent
